The result came in the midst of a turbulent week for the Blues, who have been without a permanent manager since Enzo Maresca’s sudden departure on Thursday. Interim boss Calum McFarlane took charge for this crucial fixture.
The match began with Manchester City dominating possession, but it was Chelsea who had the first chance. However, it was City who broke the deadlock late in the first half. Tijjani Reijnders capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire past Chelsea’s goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, giving City a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Despite being behind, Chelsea showed resilience after the restart. The Blues pushed forward, looking for an equalizer, and their persistence paid off in the 94th minute when Fernandez poked home a scrappy goal at the second attempt, following a fine save by City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City had several opportunities to seal the win, with Erling Haaland and others testing Chelsea’s defense. Yet, they failed to convert, leaving Guardiola’s side with just a point. With the draw, Manchester City moved into second place, six points behind league leaders Arsenal, while Chelsea climbed to fifth.
Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration after the game, noting that his team had created enough chances to secure all three points. Chelsea’s captain, Reece James, praised the team’s collective spirit and the support from the staff, who stepped in during a challenging week.
