Johannesburg – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a manhunt for the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting of “Witness D,” a key figure in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Witness D was killed outside his home shortly after 8:30 pm, while arriving with his wife. As he approached the gate, he was shot multiple times in the upper body, and was declared dead at the scene. His wife, who was in the vehicle at the time, managed to escape unharmed. Authorities confirmed that no items were stolen from the victim, as his firearm, cell phone, and wallet were found on his person.
SAPS has confirmed that an AK47 assault rifle was used in the attack, and a murder case has been opened. The police are now focused on locating both the hitmen and the person who ordered the killing, as well as the weapon used.
National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, will meet with Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the chair of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, to update him on the investigation. The two will also discuss measures to enhance security for those involved in the commission.
SAPS officers, including crime scene experts and members of the Serious and Violent Crime Unit, were at the scene late into the night, collecting evidence. Police are working quickly to uncover further leads in what has become a highly sensitive case.
Masemola has called for an urgent meeting of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) over the weekend, with a focus on improving the safety of commission officials and witnesses.
