ACCRA, Ghana | Ghana’s Vice President Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang has called for stronger regional cooperation to address climate change, displacement and growing insecurity across West Africa.

Opoku Agyemang made the call after joining the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra for the joint opening of its Second Extraordinary Session and Second Parliamentary Seminar of 2026.

The parliamentary meeting is being held under the theme, “Climate Change as a Driver of Environmental Degradation, Population Displacement and Growing Insecurity in the ECOWAS Region.”

The Vice President said the effects of climate change were becoming increasingly visible across West Africa, disrupting livelihoods while contributing to displacement and insecurity.

She said the challenges facing the region extend beyond individual national borders and require coordinated regional responses.

Opoku Agyemang called for increased cooperation among ECOWAS member states and greater investment in communities affected by climate related pressures.

She said protecting livelihoods and strengthening food security should remain central to development efforts, while also contributing to peace and stability across the region.

The Ghanaian Vice President also pointed to the role of the ECOWAS Parliament in making regional integration more meaningful for citizens.

She said the benefits of integration should be reflected in people’s ability to move, trade, work and pursue economic and social opportunities across West Africa.

Ghana’s commitment to regional integration, she said, is rooted in the country’s history and the Pan African vision associated with Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

She also recognised the contributions of successive Ghanaian governments towards regional integration and cooperation.

Opoku Agyemang said Ghana remains committed to efforts aimed at creating a more united, integrated and prosperous West Africa.
