Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has secured a sixth term in office after winning the Surulere 1 federal constituency election.
Gbajabiamila, who has spent two decades in the lower chamber of the National Assembly, defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Bosun Jeje, with a vote count of 19,717 against Jeje’s 5,121.
Gbajabiamila expressed gratitude to his constituents for their unwavering support, promising not to let them down. He acknowledged the victory as a triumph for democracy and Surulere, which has made history by granting him a sixth mandate.
The speaker, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2003, had previously won five straight elections before his recent victory. He had also served in various capacities, including minority whip, minority leader, opposition leader, and majority leader before his election as the speaker in 2019.
