Earlier this week, gunmen killed Oyibo Chukwu, the senatorial candidate for Enugu East from the Labour Party (LP), along with his aide. President Muhammadu Buhari has strongly condemned this act and expressed his dismay at the lack of regard for human life shown by the perpetrators.
In a statement released by presidential aide Femi Adesina, the President has called for those responsible for this heinous crime to face the full weight of natural and divine justice. He is committed to ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted peacefully, without any violence or hostility.
The President has also urged all political actors to respect the choice of the electorate and encourage all eligible Nigerians to exercise their civic rights without fear of intimidation. He has directed security agencies to apprehend the culprits of this crime and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and the Labour Party.
Lastly, President Buhari has prayed for the souls of the deceased to rest in peace and for comfort to be provided to those who mourn their loss.
