Nottingham Forest have dismissed head coach Ange Postecoglou just 40 days after his appointment, following a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea that left the club winless in eight matches.
Forest confirmed the decision through a short statement on Saturday, saying the Australian coach had been relieved of his duties “after a series of disappointing results and performances.”
Postecoglou, who took over from Nuno Espírito Santo on 9 September, departs with Forest sitting one point above the Premier League relegation zone. His brief tenure now stands as the shortest in Premier League history, surpassing the 41-day spell of Les Reed at Charlton in 2006.
During his time in charge, Forest suffered six defeats and two draws across all competitions. The team’s early exit from the Carabao Cup at Swansea, where they surrendered a 2-1 lead in stoppage time, added to growing frustration among fans.
Supporters at the City Ground had already been chanting for Postecoglou’s dismissal following a Europa League loss to Midtjylland, while others voiced their desire for Nuno’s return.
Reports suggest the club’s owner Evangelos Marinakis made the decision before the final whistle at the City Ground. He was seen leaving his seat midway through the second half, a move that many observers interpreted as a sign of the coach’s impending dismissal.
BBC Radio 5 Live pundits described the decision as “inevitable” given the mounting pressure, though several former players, including Peter Crouch and Glenn Hoddle, criticised the speed of the sacking, saying Postecoglou had not been given enough time to steady the team.
