Soweto — One person was killed and two others injured after attackers targeted e-hailing vehicles at Maponya Mall in Soweto, South Africa, on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred when an e-hailing car stopped near the mall entrance, where four men reportedly opened fire on the driver before setting the vehicle ablaze. A second nearby e-hailing car was also attacked, though its driver escaped; the vehicle was destroyed by fire.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said both the driver and a bystander sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to a local hospital. Authorities have launched investigations into murder, attempted murder, and arson, with the South African Police Service and Johannesburg Metro Police Department collecting evidence from the scene.
Officials suspect the attack may be linked to ongoing tensions in South Africa’s taxi industry, where violent clashes often erupt over market competition.
