MANCHESTER – ameroon star Bryan Mbeumo says he is proud to represent Africa at Manchester United and credits Samuel Eto’o as one of the biggest inspirations in his career.
The 25-year-old winger sealed a £65 million move from Brentford to Manchester United on a five-year deal, with an option for a further year. He becomes the third Cameroonian to sign for the Red Devils after Eric Djemba-Djemba and current goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Speaking in an interview with United legend Rio Ferdinand, Mbeumo said playing for the club is a dream come true. “I’m just really proud because Manchester United have fans everywhere and it’s really big all over the world. When I get back home [to Cameroon], it’s going to be a crazy feeling,” he said.
When asked about his inspiration, Mbeumo named four-time African Player of the Year Samuel Eto’o. “He was a great striker who scored goals, and that’s what I wanted to do. Now I’m scoring goals and helping my team win. He was a really good inspiration,” he said.
The former Brentford player, who spent six seasons at the London club and helped them secure Premier League promotion, also spoke about his versatility on the pitch. “I’ve played mainly as a winger, but I can also play as a No.10 or even a No.9. I’m adaptable and will play wherever the coach needs me,” he said.
Mbeumo, a product of the Troyes academy, has been capped 22 times by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, scoring six goals for the national team.
