Shujaa Finishes seventh at the Commonwealth Games

The national rugby sevens team ‘Shujaa’ lost to Scotland 12-22 in a 5-8th semi final to finish seventh at the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham, UK.

Kenya under the guidance of head coach Damian Patrick Mcgrath lost their main cup quarter final clash against New Zealand to be relegated to the 5th-8th place play-offs.

Daniel Taabu and captain Nelson Oyoo scored two tries ,with one not being converted as Kenya fell to Scotland’s Jordan Edmund,Kaleem Roberto,Harvey Elms and Ross Macann’s efforts.

Shujaa’s performance in Birmingham equaled its outcome in New Delhi and Glasgow Games in 2010 and 2014 respectively.

Kenya finished in 13th position in its first appearance as the abridged version of rugby made its debut at the common wealth games in 19998 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Kenya wound up in 11th and 9th at the 2002 and 2006 games before an 8th placing at the previous edition in 2018 in Australia.

New Zealand is the most decorated team in the tournament winning 6 tournaments while South Africa has won it once.

Shujaa now shifts its focus to the September 9th -11th Rugby Sevens World Cup in Cape Town South Africa. A total of 24 teams including hosts South Africa,Australia and Samoa will battle in the 8th edition of the championship.
