Newcastle United secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Fulham at St James’ Park to reach the EFL Cup semi-finals, with teenager Lewis Miley scoring a stoppage-time winner. The victory came just days after the Magpies suffered a 1-0 defeat to local rivals Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.
Yoane Wissa opened the scoring in the 10th minute, marking his first start since joining from Brentford in the summer by bundling home Jacob Murphy’s parried cross. Fulham responded quickly, with Sasa Lukic heading in Antonee Robinson’s delivery six minutes later to level the match.
Newcastle’s defensive woes forced Miley to fill in at right-back amid injuries to Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, and Sven Botman. Despite the shortage of senior defenders, Eddie Howe’s side pressed for the winner, with goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte making crucial saves from Bruno Guimaraes and Harvey Barnes.
The decisive moment came two minutes into stoppage-time when Miley rose at the near post to head in Sandro Tonali’s corner, sparking wild celebrations and sealing Newcastle’s progression. The Academy graduate has now scored three goals this season, all in his last six appearances.
Fulham will rue the late defeat, recalling their October league loss at St James’ Park by the same scoreline, also decided in the dying minutes. Newcastle now face Manchester City in the semi-finals, while Fulham return to Premier League action against Nottingham Forest at Craven Cottage.
EFL Cup quarter-final results this week also included Chelsea defeating Cardiff 3-1 and Manchester City overcoming Brentford 2-0. The semi-final first legs are scheduled for the week commencing 12 January, with second legs in the week commencing 2 February.
