Guyana is a model of religious tolerance and integration, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said on Monday.

The Head of State made the statement while delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony of the International Symposium on the History and Legacy of Muslims in the Caribbean at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.

“Guyana is a country where people of different faiths make up every facet of life and integrate and support each other seamlessly,” President Ali said. “We can be a case study for the rest of the world on how to achieve religious tolerance and integration.”

The President said that the symposium is an important opportunity to discuss the history and legacy of Muslims in the Caribbean, and to explore ways to promote further understanding and cooperation between different faiths.

He urged the participants to focus not only on the past, but also on the future and to come up with concrete proposals for how to make the Caribbean a more tolerant and inclusive region.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd, and other government officials were also at the event.
