PRETORIA — New evidence presented in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case questions earlier claims about Longwe Twala’s involvement in the killing of the former Bafana Bafana captain.
Brigadier Bongani Gininda, lead investigator in the case, testified at the Gauteng High Court on Wednesday, addressing a video clip introduced by the prosecution. The two-minute footage, sourced from broadcaster eNCA, was shown to counter a claim made during cross-examination by the late defence lawyer Thulani Mngomezulu.
Mngomezulu had alleged that Longwe Twala, son of music producer Sello “Chicco” Twala, shot Meyiwa with a .38 Special revolver and accidentally injured himself in the foot. It was suggested that Longwe later received treatment for a bullet wound at Rand Hospital.
However, Gininda described the video as showing Longwe walking normally near Meyiwa’s BMW X6 at singer Kelly Khumalo’s family home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, on October 27, 2014—the day after Meyiwa was fatally shot the night before.
When questioned about Longwe’s movement in the video, Gininda said, “He seems to be walking fine, contrary to what was put to me that he was limping and there was a shooting on the ankle.” The footage gave no indication of injury.
Five men, including Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi, stand trial for Meyiwa’s murder. They face charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. All have pleaded not guilty.
Confession statements from Sibiya and Ntanzi allege that Kelly Khumalo ordered the attack on Meyiwa.
