Russia bans entry to 500 Americans, including former President Obama

Russia announced on Friday that it has banned entry to 500 Americans, including former President Barack Obama, as a response to the sanctions imposed by the United States. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the entry into the Russian Federation is closed for these individuals in retaliation to the ongoing anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the Biden administration.

The United States recently expanded its sanctions blacklist, adding hundreds of more companies and individuals, as part of its efforts to exert economic pressure on Russia in response to the Ukraine offensive. CNN anchor Erin Burnett and MSNBC presenters Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough were also among those listed. Russia justified their inclusion, stating that these individuals were involved in the dissemination of Russophobic attitudes and misinformation.

In addition to media figures, Russia also blacklisted senators, congressmen, and members of think tanks who have been actively spreading anti-Russian sentiments. Furthermore, the heads of companies that supply weapons to Ukraine were also targeted with the ban.

Simultaneously, Russia revealed that it had denied a consular visit to detained US journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in March on allegations of spying. The denial of the visit was prompted by Washington’s refusal to issue visas to journalists accompanying Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on his trip to the United Nations in April.
