Women sent flying by a stray truck

THERE was celebration after Bloemfontein Celtics beat Polokwane City 4-3 on Sunday.But joy turned to sadness in phase 6 kasi, Mangaung when a speeding drunk driver crashed into a shack, leaving two pregnant women injured.

The women, aged 29 and 34, were sitting on a bed when the car came smashing through the shack. They were rushed to hospital and the community moered the driver.

Witness Gugu Letlai (26) said: “It all happened so fast. It was like something out of the movies.

“The driver, playing loud music, crashed into the shack and after the dust had settled, residents gave him a beating.

“He’s lucky the cops came in time to save him. I had just arrived home from a friend’s house when the two women asked me if I wanted to join in their celebration.”

She said seconds later, she saw the VW
Polo flying towards the shack. She said she tried to warn the women, but it was too late.

“I heard a loud bang and I saw the women flying out of the shack.”

She said when the community dragged the driver out of his car, he had a beer bottle in his hand and tried to apologise.

“A child was sent to get petrol so the man could be set alight, but the cops arrived.”

Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi said a 29-year-old man was charged with drunk driving, negligent and reckless driving and damage to property.

He’ll appear in court soon.
